How I view fashion: Fashion vs. Apparel
I always get asked about fashion. I guess it comes with the territory being a ready to wear women’s Associate Designer. I get a first hand glimpse into this somewhat ”fantasy world” everyday. The production woes, samples not fitting correctly, and having to cancel certain styles because of production. With the influx of fashion “reality” shows and blogs has given people a naive view of the fashion industry. Fashion to me is a statement- a form of art, not about who has that new pair of Christian Louboutins or Miu Miu’s latest bag. Those glossy ads in the magazines are to get the “masses” who don’t know any better to spend, spend, spend. Yes, those things are fabulous but a label does not make fashion, that’s apparel.
As for my taste in clothing, I tend to lean for very nonchalant looks. Women like Carolina Issa, Chioma Nnadi and Jen Brill stay on my inspiration boards because they look comfortable in their own skin. And being “pretty” isn’t their top priority. Their clothes just enhance that confidence. I can wear Jordans with jeans and a t-shirt and the next hour wear my five inch “Loubos” and tailored skirt with ease. Confidence is key in my looks and knowing what works for YOUR body. It’s the individuality of a person that makes FASHION shine in my eyes.
